Madge Elizabeth Pitts, 90, a long-time resident of Clarksdale, MS, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016.

She was born in 1926 in Sledge, MS to the late Roy Andrew and Lillian Reid Peden.  She was known as “Libby” to friends and family and affectionately called “Nana” by her four grandchildren.  Libby spent over 40 years employed at Bell South Telephone Company in Clarksdale.   In Clarksdale, she was an active member of Oakhurst Baptist Church where she was an officer of her Sunday School class and a host for numerous church events.  Additionally, she was active in The Pioneers for many years and involved in numerous charitable activities throughout her life.  After retiring from Bell South, she worked for Saint George Episcopal Church and George Spivey Interiors.

Libby will be remembered as loving and caring, always reaching out to others.  She was always tireless and energetic, never letting anything hold her back.  She loved to wear pretty hats and always took pride in dressing up.  She was an excellent seamstress and always enjoyed creating something by hand.  She was the epitome of a Southern Lady, valuing respect and manners, and she lived by the adage, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband Joseph Lynnfield (Lynn) Pitts; and siblings Sybil Strickland, Thomas G. Peden, and Roy A. Jr. Peden, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter Martha Elizabeth Watts (Jim) of Ocala, FL and son Brian Sellers Pitts (Allison) of Brentwood, TN;  four grandchildren, Raye Elizabeth Pitts, Carley Allison Pitts, Reid Sellers Pitts, and Hallie Ann Pitts.  Also surviving are sisters Jimmie Ray and Judy Spratley (James), sister-in-law Marie Peden, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Countryside Funeral Home in Anthony, FL on Saturday, December 3rd.  Memorial contributions can be made to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital or Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale, MS.
