OCALA

Mrs. Mark D. Camp, known also as Ruth Gutschlag Camp, passed from this life peacefully at home on March 3, 2020, with her family around her.  She was born in Ocala at Munroe Memorial hospital on August 22, 1927.

Until she married, she lived with her family in the Germantown area.  She graduated as class president and Valedictorian in 1945, and played for the “Reddick Terriers” basketball team.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis T. and Clarice R. Gutschlag, brother Carlos Gutschlag, Sr., and husband, Mark D. Camp.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Gutschlag of Winnsboro, South Carolina, her sons, Mark Camp (Mary), Glen Camp (Susan), Britt Camp (Elisabeth), daughters Evelyn Sapp (Joel), Boone West (Michael) and Dorothy Camp.

She leaves 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom always said, “I am so blessed!”

She was a giving, multi-talented woman.  After graduation she worked for the Munroe and Chambless bank and the US Forestry service.  After her marriage she served her Lord Jesus in many capacities through the years. Pianist, organist, youth choir leader, Sunday School teacher, Women's group, nursery and on and on.  She did all of this while raising six kids.

In her late 30’s, she went back to school at Central Florida Community College.  She earned her AA degree and was on the dean’s list every term. When faced with the decision to pursue her BA degree, she consulted with her pastor who advised her to really pray about it.  She did and found out she was pregnant with her 6th child!! She said she wouldn’t pray that hard for an answer again!

She loved music, and instilled in all of her children the same love and appreciation.

She was very gifted with her hands.  She taught herself to reupholster her furniture, refinished bedroom pieces, sewed almost all of the clothes she and the daughters wore and even made homemade Cabbage Patch kids dolls for her grandchildren.  Later in life she started quilting. She was so involved, dad bought her a sewing machine for downstairs so he could be with her. She loved making cakes. She made ‘doll’ cakes for the girls, numerous birthday cakes for other children and wedding cakes for family members and girls at church.

She loved to hunt and was a crack shot.  Snakes didn’t stand a chance around the lake house! Many a cold morning she would go with dad to go duck hunting up at Black Sink and come home with a brace of fowl.

She was very proud to be an associate member of the General Robert Bullock United Daughters of the Confederacy.  She always said she was born of German immigrants after the war, but she produced six good southerners.

She was a great example of a daughter, wife, mother, friend and most of all Christian.  We are very grateful for her life here on earth.

A memorial service is scheduled at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at Memorial Baptist Church.
